Student Orientation Service Leader


FUNCTION: To serve as a volunteer member of the New Student Orientation Staff, and work to facilitate the objectives of the program as outlined by the Director of Student Transitions, and the two Student Directors of Orientation Programs. 

REPORTS TO:
    Director, Student Transitions
    SOS Student Directors 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Assist in the planning and implementation of the overall orientation program.
  2. Serve as a knowledgeable resource person to incoming students by sharing information about a variety of aspects regarding the Biola Community.
  3. Serve and lead a small group of new students during orientation week.
  4. Maintain communication with your new student SOS group through the Fall semester.
  5. Initiate and develop open communication with students and family members attending any orientation event.
  6. Work with faculty and staff members, student leaders, and members of the administration to facilitate the success of any aspect of the New Student Orientation program.
  7. Participate in Spring 2012 and Fall 2012 training sessions.
  8. Participate in bi-weekly crew group meetings.
  9. Pray for new students and their arrival and transition into Biola's community.
  10. Participate in the evaluation process of the program following the SOS week (part of Fall commitment).
  11. Perform other duties as deemed necessary by the Director of Student Transitions and SOS directors.

QUALIFICATIONS
In order to qualify for this position the following statements must be true of you. If you have questions or concerns about any of these, please let us know during the application process.

A qualified SOS leader must:

  1. Have the desire and commitment to successfully complete the "murpose" of SOS.
  2. Have a desire to serve new students.
  3. Have a desire to serve Biola and its community.
  4. Have a desire to learn and be challenged both professionally and personally.
  5. Respect and abide by the behavioral expectations and standards as described in the Student Handbook and understand that a personal violation may result in the loss of position.
  6. Have completed 18 credit hours by the end of the current spring semester at Biola University, and have maintained at least a 2.0 overall cumulative GPA. No one may hold an SOS position while on academic or social probation. (Exceptions will be considered for transfer students regarding the 18 unit requirement)
  7. Participate, encourage, and support fellow SOS staff members and new students in spiritual growth and character development.
  8. Be returning to Biola for the next academic semester.
  9. Participate in the spring training program. Training sessions will be held weekly on Mondays from 3:30pm - 5:00pm. These meetings are required, and absence from spring training sessions may result in the loss of position.
  10. Be available to attend Spring Training Retreat on March 16-17, 2012.
  11. Be available to start SOS on Thursday, August 9, 2012.
  12. Be available during the summer to communicate via website and email with incoming students.
  13. Participate in the fall training program. Training sessions will be held weekly. Day and Time will be announced in Spring Semester.
  14. Not take courses or hold an outside job that would come into direct conflict with the responsibilities of the SOS position.


REMUNERATION:
The position is voluntary in nature and holds the following benefits:

  1. Room and board during Orientation and training.
  2. Fall and Spring Retreat cost covered. Some personal expenses will be your responsibility.
  3. T-shirt and free tickets to the special off-campus activities during Orientation Week.
  4. Can be used to fulfill your Student Ministry requirement.
  5. Training will be applicable to future leadership positions on and off campus.
  6. The opportunity to serve the Lord and others by identifying, using and developing the gifts that God has given you.
  7. The opportunity to build lasting relationships with and among new students.
